# Live map and tracking interfaces

> How we design live map interfaces: positions streamed in real time, quiet vector tiles for dispatch, and map tiles saved to the phone for offline use.

A map is either the whole product or a distraction. We design two kinds: live maps where positions stream in and one problem has to stand out, and offline maps that work where the signal doesn't.

- **Used for:** UI/UX Design · Mobile Development
- **Backed by:** 2 case studies · 2 concepts

## Why we use it

- Positions streamed from a driver app, so the map shows where vehicles are now
- Quiet vector map tiles that sit back and let the data stand out
- Late, idle and off-route rules raised on the server, not spotted by eye
- One selection driving the list, the map and the detail panel together
- Map tiles downloaded ahead of time, so a phone map works without signal

## When we don’t

- Products where an address and a link to a maps app are enough
- Maps added for decoration, where a list answers the question faster
- Live tracking that has no one watching and no action to take

## Alternatives we weigh

- **A list with addresses.** Often the clearer answer. If nobody needs to see where things are relative to each other, a sorted list beats a map.
- **Links out to a maps app.** Directions handed off to the phone's own maps. Cheap and familiar, but no offline control and nothing live.
- **Polling instead of streaming.** Asking for positions every few seconds is simpler to build. It's fine for slow-moving data and wasteful for a busy fleet.

## How we design for maps

Both projects behind this page are studio concepts. Fleet Console is a design concept for a dispatch console: positions streamed from the driver app, quiet vector map tiles, and late, idle and off-route rules raised on the server. On-time vans stay grey, so the one late van is the one you see.

Travel Planner is a React Native concept for iOS and Android. Each day's map downloads the night before, so it works on a mountain road or in a station with no signal.

The common thread is restraint. A map earns its place by answering one question quickly, and everything else on it should get out of the way.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do we need a live map at all?

Only if someone acts on what it shows. A dispatcher deciding who to call needs one; a customer checking an order often just needs an arrival time.

### How does a map work offline?

The app downloads the map tiles for an area before they're needed, such as the night before a day's plans, and reads them from the phone when there's no signal.

### Why vector tiles?

They can be styled to stay quiet, so roads and labels sit back and the vehicles or stops you care about carry the colour.
