Headless commerce splits a store in two: a commerce service that holds products, orders and payments, and a storefront we design and build around how your customers actually buy.

- **Used for:** Web Development
- **Backed by:** 1 case study · 1 concept
- **Updated:** 2026-10-02

## Why we use it

- Product pages that read like the product itself, not a theme's template
- Static product pages that load instantly and hold up under a launch-day spike
- A subscription flow cut down to the few choices that matter
- A homepage led by what regulars come back for, such as a release calendar
- Payments, tax and orders left to a commerce service built for them

## When we don’t

- A first store with a few products, where a hosted shop theme gets you selling sooner
- Teams that want to change layouts daily without a developer
- Catalogues where off-the-shelf apps and plugins already cover every need

## Alternatives we weigh

- **A hosted shop with a theme.** The quickest way to start selling. Less control over layout, speed and the subscription flow, but far less to build.
- **A shop theme, heavily customised.** A middle path. It works until the customisations fight the platform's own updates.
- **A fully custom store.** Payments, tax and orders built from scratch. Rarely worth it for a small business; a commerce service does that part better.

## How we use it

Coffee Roastery is a studio concept, not client work: a storefront for a small-batch roaster. It shows how we'd use headless commerce for a business that sells on freshness.

The roast calendar leads the homepage, each coffee page reads like its bag label, and a subscription takes three choices instead of a form. Coffee pages are static, so they load instantly, and subscription billing sits behind those three choices.

None of that fits neatly into a stock shop theme. That's the signal we look for before recommending headless: the way people buy is particular enough that the storefront has to be built for it.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is headless commerce only for large stores?

No, but it pays off when the storefront itself matters, as with subscriptions or a product that needs explaining. For a simple catalogue, a hosted theme is often the better choice.

### Who handles payments and orders?

The commerce service does. We design and build the storefront and connect it; the money, tax and order records stay with a platform built for them.

### Can we still edit products ourselves?

Yes. Products, prices and stock are managed in the commerce service's own dashboard, and the storefront picks up the changes.
