# Travel itinerary app development

> Designing and building a trip itinerary app for iOS and Android: one timeline per trip, bookings pinned to the hour, and maps downloaded the night before.

Trip plans end up spread across confirmation emails, screenshots and a notes app, and the map fails exactly where signal does. An itinerary app puts the whole trip on one thread you can open anywhere.

## Who it’s for

Travel companies, tour operators and travel startups who want trips planned, carried and followed in one app.

## Features

**Must have**

- One timeline per trip, day by day
- Bookings attached to the hour they're for
- Importing bookings by forwarding the confirmation email
- Maps for each day that open without a connection
- The next thing to do, always at the top
- Trips that keep working when the phone is offline

**Nice to have**

- Sharing a trip with fellow travellers
- Notes and photos on each stop
- Time-zone aware times across flights
- Suggested stops near the day's route

## Screens and flows

1. Trips list
2. A trip's timeline
3. A day with its map
4. A booking's detail
5. Add or import a booking
6. Offline maps and downloads

## Platform options

- **iOS and Android with React Native.** Travellers carry both kinds of phone. One React Native codebase covers both stores, which is how the Travel Planner concept is planned.
- **Web companion for planning.** Planning a long trip is easier on a laptop. A web view of the same trips can come later, once the phone app is proven.

## Integrations

- Booking confirmations imported by forwarding the email
- Offline map tiles downloaded per day

## How we'd approach it

A trip reads as a story, so we'd design it as one vertical timeline. Days follow each other, and each ticket or reservation snaps to the hour it matters, not to a separate bookings tab.

Offline isn't a mode the traveller turns on. Each day's map downloads the night before, and every screen a traveller needs on the road is built to open from what's already on the phone.

Travel Planner is a studio concept, not client work. What we'd measure is trips planned end to end in the app, maps opened without a connection, and bookings imported rather than typed.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do maps work without a connection?

Each day's map area is downloaded ahead of time, ideally the night before on wifi. The app then reads the tiles from the phone instead of the network.

### Do travellers have to type in every booking?

Not in the way we'd design it. Forwarding the confirmation email to the app imports the booking and pins it to the right hour.

### Can a tour operator push itineraries to its customers?

That's a reasonable second step. The timeline works the same whether a traveller builds it or an operator sends it; who can edit it is the part to agree on.
