# Fleet tracking dashboard design

> Designing a live fleet tracking and dispatch dashboard: one selection driving list, map and detail, with colour saved for vans dispatch has to act on.

On a live map, everything moves, so nothing stands out. A dispatch dashboard has to make the one van that's twelve minutes late look different from the nine that are fine.

- **Industry:** Logistics
- **Timeline:** Roughly 6–10 weeks to design; a build is scoped after that

## Who it’s for

Delivery, courier and logistics teams running a fleet from a dispatch desk, and the product teams building tools for them.

## Features

**Must have**

- A live map of every vehicle
- A list that stays in step with the map
- One selection that drives the list, the map and the detail panel
- Late, idle and off-route states raised automatically
- Colour kept for states dispatch has to act on
- A vehicle's stops, timing and driver in one panel

**Nice to have**

- Messaging a customer from a late alert
- Filters by depot, route or shift
- A day's replay for a single van
- End-of-day stop counts per vehicle

## Screens and flows

1. Fleet overview with list and map
2. Alerts needing action
3. A vehicle's detail and route
4. A stop's detail
5. Rules for late, idle and off-route
6. Day summary

## Platform options

- **Web app at the dispatch desk.** Dispatch works on large screens all day, so the console is a web app. Fleet Console is designed for this setting.
- **A driver app as the data source.** Positions come from the drivers' phones. If you don't have a driver app yet, it's a separate build to plan alongside the console.

## Integrations

- Position streams from a driver app
- Vector map tiles

## How we'd approach it

We'd design for exceptions. On-time vans stay grey, and colour is kept for states dispatch has to act on: late, idle, off route. A busy screen becomes a short list of things to do.

One selection drives everything. Pick a van in the list and the map centres on it and the detail panel opens. Pick it on the map and the list follows. Dispatch never has to match two views by eye.

Fleet Console is a studio concept and a design project only, not client work. What we'd measure is the time from a late alert to a customer message, calls between dispatch and drivers, and stops completed per van.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do you design the console or build it as well?

Fleet Console is a design concept. We design and build web apps as a studio, so the same team can take the design into a build. That scope is agreed separately.

### Where do the late and off-route alerts come from?

In our design they're rules raised on the server, so every dispatcher sees the same alert at the same time. The screen only decides how loudly to show it.

### Can it handle hundreds of vehicles?

The design assumes most vehicles are fine and stay quiet. That's what keeps a large fleet readable; how many it handles in practice depends on the build.
