Most waiting rooms are full because patients can't see the queue, so they come early and stay. A queue app moves the wait to wherever the patient already is. This is how we'd design and build one.

- **Services:** Mobile Development · UI/UX Design
- **Industry:** Health
- **Timeline:** Roughly 3–5 months to a first store release
- **Backed by:** 1 case study · 1 concept
- **Updated:** 2026-10-02

## Who it’s for

Clinics, practices and small clinic networks whose waiting rooms overflow and whose front desk spends the day answering how long the wait is.

## Features

**Must have**

- Book a slot for a chosen clinic, doctor or service
- A live queue number as the first thing on screen
- An estimate of when to leave home, updated as the queue moves
- Push notifications when the patient's turn is close
- A desk view where staff call the next number
- Late, skipped and walk-in patients handled without breaking the order

**Nice to have**

- Several branches in one app
- A waiting-room screen that shows the numbers being called
- Visit history and upcoming appointments
- Reminders the day before a booked slot

## Screens and flows

1. Choose a branch and service
2. Pick a slot or join today's queue
3. The queue number, live
4. Time to leave
5. Desk view for calling the next patient
6. Visit history

## Platform options

- **iOS and Android from one codebase.** Patients bring both kinds of phone, so we'd build with React Native and ship to both stores from the same code. That's how the Clinic Queue App concept is planned.
- **Web view at the desk.** Staff don't need the phone app. A simple browser page at reception calls the next number and shows who is waiting.

## Integrations

- Push notifications for both platforms
- A clinic's records system, when it has one to read from

## How we'd approach it

The queue number is the interface. It's the first thing a patient sees, it updates live, and everything else on the screen is secondary to it.

The second thing is the decision a patient actually makes: when to leave. We'd turn the queue position into a plain answer, such as leave in 20 minutes, and send a notification when it changes.

The desk matters as much as the phone. If calling the next number takes more than a tap, staff will stop using it and the queue on the phone stops being true.

Clinic Queue App is a studio concept, not client work. It shows how we'd build this; what we'd measure is time in the waiting room, missed appointments and how often the desk is asked how long.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do patients have to install an app to use the queue?

For live updates and the nudge to leave, yes. We'd still let the desk add walk-in patients by name, so nobody is turned away for not having a phone.

### Can it work with the records system we already use?

Often, if that system can share today's appointments. We check what it exposes during the requirements step, before anything is designed around it.

### What happens when a patient misses their number?

Staff decide the rule: drop to the end, keep a short grace period, or rebook. We design the desk view so applying it is one tap.
