# UI/UX design for healthcare

> UI/UX design for medical records and patient apps: dense screens for clinic staff, plain ones for patients, from the designers of Rekamedika.

Clinic staff need a lot on one screen and no time to hunt for it. Patients need very little, said plainly. We design for both sides of the clinic, and know the difference matters.

## What health teams run into

- **Forms in a different order from the visit.** When the record asks for things out of sequence, staff skip fields or fill them in later. Matching the form to the visit keeps records complete.
- **Dense screens that turn into clutter.** Clinicians want everything at hand. Hierarchy, grouping and quiet surfaces let a screen hold a lot without becoming hard to read.
- **Patients of every age and ability.** Patient screens have to work for someone unwell, anxious or unused to apps. Short words, large targets and one task per screen.
- **Status that takes clicks to find.** Who is waiting and what's unsigned should be visible from across the room, not behind a menu.

## Constraints we design for

- **SATUSEHAT.** Clinic records in Indonesia are expected to reach the Ministry of Health's SATUSEHAT platform. The design has to make the required fields easy to complete during a normal visit.
- **Health data under UU PDP.** Health information is a specific category of personal data. Screens show it by role, and nothing sensitive should be readable over a shoulder or on a lock screen.
- **Mistakes have consequences.** A wrong patient or a wrong dose is a real risk. Designs need clear patient identity on every screen and confirmation where an error would matter.

## Features that keep coming up

- Visit records laid out in the order of a visit
- Patient identity visible on every clinical screen
- Status readable at a distance
- Two table densities for laptop and touchscreen
- Role-based views for desk, nurses and doctors
- Patient screens with one task each
- A live queue number as the patient's main screen

## Typical builds

- [Electronic medical records development](https://goodtogrid.com/solutions/electronic-medical-records) — An EMR web app for clinics, laid out in the order a visit happens.
- [Clinic queue app development](https://goodtogrid.com/solutions/clinic-queue-app) — A phone app that shows a patient's place in the clinic queue and tells them when to set off.

## How we approach it

Healthcare design has two audiences who want opposite things. Staff want density: every field and status on hand between patients. Patients want calm: one thing to do and words they understand. We design each side for its own user rather than splitting the difference.

Rekamedika is the staff side. Records follow the order of a visit, status reads from across the room, and tables come in two densities because a clinic has both laptops and touchscreens. The surfaces stay quiet so the data carries the screen.

The Clinic Queue App concept is the patient side. The queue number is the interface, it updates live, and the app says when to leave home. Same clinic, a very different screen.

## Frequently asked questions

### What health products have you designed?

Rekamedika, an electronic medical records web app for PT Celebes Niaga Jaya, is client work, built toward SATUSEHAT with registration in progress. Clinic Queue App is a studio concept for patients.

### Can you design without building?

Yes. We can hand over interface files, a clickable prototype and a design system for your own developers. On Rekamedika we also built the web app.

### Do you test with clinic staff?

We review designs with the people who will use them, in working sessions. For a clinic that means the desk, nurses and doctors, ideally on the screens they actually use.
