# Mobile app development for travel

> Travel apps for iOS and Android: itineraries by day, bookings pinned to the hour and offline maps, from a design and engineering studio in Makassar.

Travellers open the app at a station, a gate or a street corner, often roaming and short on battery. We design and build iOS and Android travel apps that hold up there, not just at home on wifi.

## What travel teams run into

- **Plans scattered across inboxes.** Flights in one email, the hotel in another, a ferry time in a screenshot. Bringing them onto one timeline is most of the value.
- **The map fails where it's needed.** Coverage drops on islands, in mountains and underground. Maps and tickets have to be on the phone before the trip, not fetched on the spot.
- **Time zones and day boundaries.** A red-eye flight belongs to two days and two zones. The itinerary has to show local time where the traveller will be.
- **Typing bookings on a phone.** Nobody wants to copy a confirmation code by hand. Importing from the confirmation email removes most of that work.

## Constraints we design for

- **Email and location permissions.** Reading booking emails and using location are sensitive. Both app stores require clear permission prompts and privacy disclosures, and travellers should be able to say no and still use the app.
- **Offline storage limits.** Map tiles take space and phones run out of it. The app has to choose what to download, say how much, and clean up after the trip.
- **Booking partners' terms.** Showing or changing a booking held by an airline, hotel or agent depends on what each partner allows. Most itinerary apps read bookings rather than manage them.

## Features that keep coming up

- One vertical timeline per trip, day by day
- Bookings pinned to the hour they're for
- Import by forwarding the confirmation email
- Each day's map downloaded the night before
- Local times shown in the destination's zone
- Tickets and codes available offline
- Sharing a trip with travel companions

## Typical builds

- [Travel itinerary app development](https://goodtogrid.com/solutions/travel-itinerary-app) — Day-by-day trip timelines, imported bookings and maps that open offline.
- [Booking app design and development](https://goodtogrid.com/solutions/booking-app) — Appointment booking with live availability, reminders and a staff view of the day.

## How we approach it

We think of a trip as a story told in order. In the Travel Planner concept every trip is one vertical timeline, tickets snap to the hour they're for, and the day ahead is always the first thing on screen.

Then we design for the worst moment: no signal, low battery, one free hand. Whatever the traveller needs then, the map, the booking code, the address in the local language, is stored on the phone in advance.

The concept is built in React Native, with offline map tiles and bookings imported by forwarding the confirmation email. The same choices would be our starting point for a client's travel app, adjusted to the trips its users actually take.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Travel Planner a client app?

No. Travel Planner is a studio concept. It shows how we'd approach a travel app; we don't claim downloads or results for it.

### Can the app sell tickets or rooms?

It can, but that's a different product. Selling means working with booking partners and handling payments. An itinerary app that organises bookings made elsewhere is a smaller, faster first release.

### How do offline maps work?

In the Travel Planner concept, the map tiles for each day download the night before, so the map opens without a connection. How much to store is decided per trip, not for the whole country.
