Plenty of good businesses run on a website builder, and for many that's the right call. A custom site earns its cost when your content doesn't fit a template, or speed and ownership matter.

## Custom website vs Website builder, side by side

| | Custom website | Website builder |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Upfront cost** | Design and build time, paid once | Little or none; a template and an afternoon |
| **Monthly cost** | Hosting, often low for a static site | A subscription, which rises with features |
| **Editing** | Through a CMS if one is built in, or by the developer | Drag and drop, by anyone on the team |
| **Layout** | Each section shaped to its content | Within the template's blocks and settings |
| **Speed** | As fast as the build allows; prerendered pages load quickly | Good for most sites, harder to tune beyond what the platform offers |
| **Ownership** | Code in a repository you own, portable to any host | The site lives on the platform; moving means rebuilding |

## Which one, when

- **A builder, for a simple site you'll edit yourself.** A few pages, a contact form, updates every week by someone on your team. A builder gets you live sooner and keeps editing in your hands.
- **Custom, when the content needs its own shape.** A curriculum, a timetable, listings with floor plans. KYZN Preschool's content didn't fit a template, so each section got its own card.
- **Custom, when speed and ownership matter.** When load time, search and moving hosts freely are worth paying for, a custom front end gives you control over all three.

## How we'd decide

We ask two questions. Does your content fit a template without losing what makes it useful? And who updates it, how often?

If the answers are yes and someone on your team, weekly, a builder is probably right, and you don't need us. If the content has its own shape, or the site has to be fast and portable, a custom build is worth the upfront cost.

KYZN Preschool is a custom front end with no backend, so the school has nothing to maintain beyond the content itself.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can a custom site still be easy to edit?

Yes, if it's built with a CMS. If updates are rare, leaving the CMS out keeps the site simpler, and we make small changes on request.

### Can we start on a builder and move later?

Yes, and it's often sensible. Expect to rebuild rather than export, but the content and structure you've worked out carry over.

### Is a custom site better for search?

Not by default. It helps when it means faster pages and cleaner structure, but good content matters more than how the site was made.
